WHAT’S IT ABOUT

In an adventure that will take them well beyond what they’ve known before, Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) discover that they are but one of six different Troll tribes scattered over six different lands and devoted to six different kinds of music: Funk, Country, Techno, Classical, Pop, and Rock. Their world is about to get a lot bigger and a whole lot louder. A member of hard-rock royalty, Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom), aided by her father King Thrash (Ozzy Osbourne), wants to destroy all other kinds of music to let rock reign supreme. With the fate of the world at stake, Poppy and Branch, along with their friends – Biggie (James Corden), Chenille (Caroline Hjelt), Satin (Aino Jawo), Cooper (Ron Funches) and Guy Diamond (Kunal Nayyar) – set out to visit all the other lands to unify the Trolls in harmony against Barb, who’s looking to upstage them all.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Great story, great music, and a well deserved great message considering what’s going on right now. After the first film, I didn’t think they could have made it any more family-friendly, but I stand corrected. Trolls: World Tour expands on their universe AND their juvenile behavior. For the adults “forced” to watch this with their kids, the music makes T.W.T. bearable for all those over twelve. The story is simple enough for kids to follow but not so stupid it insults their intelligence. One noticeable downside is this is not a good stand-alone film. You may not need to see the first one, but you do miss out on character development of the primary two Trolls. All the other trolls are one-dimensional and are used primarily to move the story along. Luckily, since this is obviously aimed at very young children, there is only one story to keep track of, and as stated early, a straightforward one. The message is almost the same as the first movie, be yourself, be kind, and you’ll be happy. The enemies then were the Bergens. This time, it’s Barb, the princess of the rock Trolls. Her mission is to make all music rock music no matter what. Then there’s the Pop princess Poppy. She wants to hug the problem away again. And, she is wrong, yet again. But she never gives up, and things eventually work themselves out. . . .again. For any kids watching this movie, they will all agree, Trolls: World Tour is very colorful and upbeat with a lot of parts that will make them laugh out loud. As for the adults, the music is it’s only saving grace. Everything from pop to classical is represented at least once, and every song they performed was perfect even if most of them had their words changed to represent Trolls or was only heard for a couple of seconds. Finally, with theaters closed, that makes this the first high budgeted movie to utilize the new $19.99 Premium Video On-Demand option without spending any time in theaters as drive-ins don’t count. Personally, I think that’s too much for any film but if you have a big enough family AND an excellent theater room setup, go for it.
