What’s It About

Seven years after the Monsterpocalypse, Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien), along with the rest of humanity, has been living underground ever since giant creatures took control of the land. After reconnecting over radio with his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick), who is now 80 miles away at a coastal colony, Joel begins to fall for her again. As Joel realizes that there’s nothing left for him underground, he decides against all logic to venture out to Aimee, despite the dangerous monsters that stand in his way.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

It’s been a while, but we finally have a movie worth watching. Love and Monsters is an adventure comedy with an actual story. Seven years after the near extinction of the human race, survivors are forced to live underground to survive the giant monsters residing above ground. This film focuses on Joel. When the Monsterpocalypse started, he and his high school girlfriend, Aimee, were in a relationship and forced to part ways with their families because of the current situation. Seven relationshipless years later, Joel reconnects with Aimee via radio. After finding out she was 80 miles away, he decides to make, what everyone in his colony called stupid, the above-ground trek to be with his true love, Aimee. Decisions like that are what makes Joel such a likable character and what ultimately gives Love and Monsters its comedic heart and soul. So what if Joel has zero survival skills and no one in his colony believes he will last an hour outside of the bunker, Joel has love and hope on his side, and yes, the story is that simple yet entertaining at the same time. Along his way to Aimee, Joel gets a dog, meets a couple of drifters, and kills some giant creatures, to name a few. As things progress, Joel gets a little braver, his skills are a little better, and his determination is ruthless. Ultimately, Love and Monsters is a teenage dystopian monster-filled love/hate roller coaster of action, adventure, and discovery of self-filled emotions all in one nearly 2-hour movie.
