MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Just because we can’t go anywhere, doesn’t mean we will watch anything. Coffee & Kareem is a very uneven movie. The dramatic parts overshadowed the comical elements, and the funny stuff felt more like an improved mistake. Every actor seemed to have phoned it in, although, Taraji P. Henson’s performance was the best by far. Ed Helms, as Officer Coffee, looked and acted out of place for the entire movie. Terrence Little Gardenhigh as the foul-mouthed Kareem was so over the top, he was impossible to be believed. I’m sure these actors are excellent in other films, but this one had to be just for the paycheck. I had no problem with the story, but the stuff they did was so stupid, it made the movie unwatchable. So an upset Black kid is mad because his mother is dating a White cop and decides to put out a hit on him. That is both serious AND stupid at the same time. Based on the posters that were released, I think they wanted to give this movie an eighties feel, with seventies wardrobes and a nineties script. They failed on all accounts. The worse part was the kid. Acting alongside Ed Helms was so weird to watch. It was like they were in two separate movies. Coffee was like a cop straight out of Mayberry, while Kareem had to be auditioning for the next NWA concert tour. This has to be what Netflix thinks its subscribers will watch since they are stuck at home.
