What’s It About

Behind our world, there is another: a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When an unexpected sandstorm transports Captain Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her unit (TI Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta) to a new world, the soldiers are shocked to discover that this hostile and unknown environment is home to enormous and terrifying monsters immune to their firepower. In their desperate battle for survival, the unit encounters the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa), whose unique skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the powerful creatures. As Artemis and Hunter slowly build trust, she discovers that he is part of a team led by the Admiral (Ron Perlman). Facing a danger so great it could threaten to destroy their world, the brave warriors combine their unique abilities to band together for the ultimate showdown.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Video game movies either surprise us with how faithful they try to be (Tomb Raider, Sonic the Hedgehog) or suck so bad the actors hesitate to admit they were in it (Double Dragon, Super Mario Bros.). The latest game-inspired film has no problem looking like the source material, mainly due to computer graphics advances. They threw as much game stuff in this movie as they did with Resident Evil, the other Capcom property. Is it faithful to the game? Yes and no. As stated, the CGI was great. Therefore the monsters were fantastic. The costumes, the characters, even the weapons had near-perfect representation. The story is what you would expect in this type of movie, and the non-video game extras (military soldiers, weapons, etc.) were needed to accommodate the live-action adaptation. The monsters were a lot more deadly than in the games, and it shows when matched with modern weaponry like missiles and tanks. If you’ve played the game, you know the only way to defeat monsters is with traps, grappling hooks, and that famous sword. Monster Hunter uses everything available within the realms of reality to try and satisfy its core audience while introducing a new franchise to the non-gamer. That, unfortunately, is the downfall of this film. Only real gamers will fully appreciate this movie. For everyone else, turn your brain off and enjoy the ride. This film is not filled with any life-changing sayings, and it will throw physics out the window (that sword is HUGE), but if you want loads of action with little or very weak dialog, Monster Hunter is a must-see.
