MOVIESinMO REVIEW
I said it when I first heard about it, and I will continue to say it – Who in the hell asked for this movie? Who still wants to turn a twenty-year-old video game into a movie? More importantly, who is this film for? Well, somebody will a lot of pull must have wanted it. Then forced Paramount to finance it and here we are. An idea so bad it had be good. In other words, why not. So it starts off with Sonic being chased by Dr. Robotnik through the streets of Green Hills, Montana. Sonic begins to explain his current situation but then says those familiar words in this type of setting, “Let me start from the beginning.” Clichés like that are all throughout this film. The plot, on the other hand, was weird, weak, and used to insert as many video game references as possible. The original Sonic the Hedgehog premiered on the Sega Genesis game console in 1991. So it brings to question, why did Paramount try so hard to give this movie an authentic feel if none of its core audience wouldn’t be born for another ten years after the creation of the game. Most of them would have never heard of Sonic outside of rummaging through their parent’s old stuff, so playing it would have been rare. Yes, this movie has all the references from the original games plus more. Nearly everything seen or said is a Sonic callback. Perfect for the thirtysomething Sonic the Hedgehog fan, but this film is clearly for the ten and under crowd. There are lots of visual gags for the kids mixed with quirky one-liners for the parents. Ultimately, the movie starts to progressively grow on you one corny joke at a time. For what it’s worth, it is a decent fun family film kids will enjoy and adults from the nineties will get to reminisce over a game they might have played. Hey Hollywood, next time (and you know there will be a next time) pick a game with more than just running around collecting stuff – talking to you Pac-Man.
