WHAT’S IT ABOUT

After he and his wife are murdered, marine Ray Garrison is resurrected by a team of scientists. Enhanced with nanotechnology, he becomes a superhuman, biotech killing machine – Bloodshot. As Ray first trains with fellow super-soldiers, he cannot recall anything from his former life. But when his memories flood back and he remembers the man that killed both him and his wife, he breaks out of the facility to get revenge, only to discover that there’s more to the conspiracy than he thought.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Valiant Comics steps into the ring, but it may be too little too late. The good part is they didn’t need to theoretically start over by explaining scientific or electronic things Marvel and DC already put in place. Also, it needs to be known that this is a comic book conversion. That explains and gives reason for so many incredibly impossible feats of strength and endurance. Since this is the first film from Valiant, a lot of pressure was put upon the writers, the director, and the acting ability and box office draw of Vin Diesel. That said, I can’t wholly blame any actors involved because the script seemed to be half-written and half improvised. The issue is this is an origin film. Unless it’s a well-known story that has been told countless times before, such as Batman’s tragic upbringing, Superman’s an alien or Wonder Woman’s hidden home; the audience needs more. There needed to be more than a quick, partially explained covert mission (I guess that’s how he was killed). I’m still not sure if the one shown was how it started considering his actions were played over and over to convince him to execute a new target. Bloodshot is supposed to be the film that kickstarts the Valiant Comics Cinematic Universe. After seeing it, I don’t think so. Bloodshot is to Valiant just as that fist Hulk movie was to Marvel – We know it exists, we just don’t talk about it. The movie started with promise but fell hard shortly after the first fifteen minutes. As stated above, there were so many things going against its success: lazy writing, somewhat interesting but hugely unknown characters, and Vin Diesel. Maybe if some other actor played the leading role, Bloodshot might have been a little (but not much) better. Just like Stallone has the Rambo franchise, Van Damme has kickboxer films, and Schwarzenegger is The Terminator, Vin Diesel should stick with The Fast And The Furious.
