MOVIESinMO REVIEW

What the hell is going on in Hollywood? Lately, it seems like every other movie was written or produced by a film student. The Rhythm Section has a decent concept with a muddled execution. A plane explodes, and one person, Stephanie, decides to find out why. Of course, she has the assistance of a former CIA operative and several others that oddly help her on a mission to find out why the plane with her parents on it was targeted. As the story progresses, it begins to lose more and more of its believability. Anyone can believe that a person will be distraught and understandably hurt if their family dies in a plane crash. Anyone can check the facts of the incident to verify the reason or reasons that caused the accident. And finally, anyone can get assistance from an outside source if they feel some of the facts don’t add up. This is not what happened to Stephanie. She was told by a person she just met that the crash was not an accident. She was trained to fight by a guy she never knew. She was financed by a couple she threatened. Every altercation she encounters, she somehow wins in some very unrealistic manner. It’s as if the writers didn’t think this movie through. They knew what they wanted to happen even if it made no sense to get the character to that point. All of this makes The Rhythm Section unentertaining and somewhat boring. The action parts feel forced with loads of amateur attempts at copying what they might have seen done better in a real action/spy type of film. When all is said and done, The Rhythm Section is just a poor copy of so many other films you could spend your money and time on.
