MOVIESinMO REVIEW
At first glance, this film doesn’t seem like much, but you quickly realize it’s so much more once it starts. Once titled “Connected,” this movie was held back like every other movie during the pandemic. And like a lot of films lately, it was sold to a streaming service. With that type of track record, the potential for success was limited. Luckily, The Mitchells vs. the Machines was produced before the Covid19 shutdown. In other words, that standard of big-budget Hollywood-made films shines through. The opening scene helps you understand the title, but the actual story is all about family. The daughter, Kate Michell, has always been into film production, and as a high school graduate, with examples of her work, she gets accepted into film school in California. Before this happens, we see just how dysfunctional the relationship between Kate and her father, Rick is. He is an outdoorsman with no respect for current technology. Therefore, he has no appreciation for anything his daughter is into. Kate’s mother tries to keep a neutral yet open mind, and her brother is obsessed with dinosaurs. And, of course, they have a pet; A very inept dog named Monchi. When Kate received her acceptance letter, she was ecstatic. She would finally be with her people. Rick, on the other hand, had other plans. He missed the connection he had with his daughter and decided to drive her, and the rest of the family, across the country to Silicon Valley from Michigan. As with almost all family road trips, it does not go well. The interactions between the father and daughter are priceless, but as a whole, the Mitchells are not that dysfunctional; they’re weird, in a good way. Throughout the film, the love between them as a family shines. The Mitchells vs. the Machines is filled with non-stop hilarity that crosses the age barrier seamlessly. Overall, the only downfall of the movie is the conclusion. The resolution should have come from conversations, but instead, the film further justifies our reliance on technology.
