MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Peter Rabbit 2 is a mediocre family-filled film with loads of puns, childish antics, and dad jokes. Similar to the first film, Peter gets into trouble and learns his lesson – eventually. Right from the start, there’s a preview of how much things have and have not changed in Peter’s mind. But regardless of how things were before, Peter, his animal friends, and family now live together in peace. Thomas and Bea live comfortably mainly because of Bea’s (Beatrice Potter) children’s book about Peter Rabbit’s hijinks. As usual, Peter is oblivious, and now the story has its start. Peter convinced himself that he was a bad seed and can’t change. So he left home and joined a gang. I know this is supposed to be adapted from a beloved children’s book, but most of this film is like a Bugs Bunny copy with a British accent. The chases, the enemies, the endless pranks. They all have a Looney Tunes feel to them. That’s not a bad thing, but there have been chases in other animated movies, and no one thinks, hey, that just like Bugs, or Tom & Jerry, or any number of toons that contain similar types of action. Those other movies didn’t have a problem being original, so what happened in Peter Rabbit 2? In my opinion, it was two things. One, they never thought they would make a second movie, and two, plain old lazy writing. Peter Rabbit 2 is only entertaining to a point, and then only if you’re a child. As an adult, it’s painfully slow, childish, and an insult to most people’s intelligence. Apparently, the point of this film is to teach kids right from wrong and how important family is in the big scheme of things. But it was done in such a haphazard way it became borderline preachy. Nevertheless, Peter does learn a lesson, and since his antics can be very tempting to a young child, everything was explained with young kids in mind.
