MOVIESinMO REVIEW
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That had to be the rule when this movie went into production. So the only thing they had to do was figure out a way to get them all back in the game. That’s where Spencer comes in. He, somehow, had the game and got trapped in it. The others were in town for a yearly get together. Yes, that is a weak and overused plot device but no one said Jumanji was a contender for an Oscar. Now that everyone is back, let us just assume our friend that no one has heard from is trapped in the game. Ok, whatever, anything to get this movie started. After opening this film in an uncreative way of getting all of our stars in one place, for an added amount of separation from the last movie, let the game chose the people that will play, even if they’re not in the same room when it malfunctions. Luckily, Jumanji 3 redeems itself by being much funnier than it’s predecessor. The body switch is a nice addition, and having different levels from the first one gave the game more depth. Sometimes the jokes fell flat, but the chemistry between the actors was the real reason this film stands above other movies with similar plot types. The rest of the movie introduced a lot of video game elements frequently seen in games to assist players in the harder levels, most notably the wordplay. When a game asks you to follow a flame, that’s not always an actual flame, as in a fire. Those that play adventure games are well aware of this and Jumanji used this trick throughout the film. The best parts were those no one explained, such as the villain and the horse (Bethany’s new avatar). With everything going on, they were still able to continue the previous storylines and create a few new ones just in case they want to keep the franchise going. Jumanji 3: The Next Level is a very entertaining movie that will have no problem surpassing the first two films, and since it is a video game, coming up with new obsticles including villans, will never be an issue.
