WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Peter and his grandpa used to be very close, but when Grandpa Jack moves in with the family, Peter is forced to give up his most prized possession: his bedroom. Peter will stop at nothing to get his room back, scheming with friends to devise a series of pranks to drive him out. However, grandpa doesn’t give up easily, and it turns into an all-out war between the two.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
The War With Grandpa is the latest in a long run of slapstick comedies, and during this time of Covid19, it’s a well-needed sight. Like the title infers, it is an official war between Grandpa (Robert DeNiro) and his grandson, Peter (Oakes Fegley). But before that happens, we get a little insight into the lives of both main characters. Peter is a sixth-grader adjusting to the trials of being the new kid, and grandpa Ed is dealing with the technology of an ever-changing world and getting old – of course. Fast forward to Grandpa needing (being forced is more accurate) to live with his daughter. On the other side, Peter is dealing with bullies, adjusting to a new school, and now he has to give his room to his Grandpa Ed. So after complaining to his friends, Peter decides to fight for his place back. A “contract” is written, and The War With Grandpa turns into the 2020 version of Home Alone. It also becomes very predictable. There is no shortage of old people’s jokes throughout the film, and both Ed and Peter display physical humor to compliment them. Later on, Ed and Peter’s friends get involved, and the antics reach new levels of stupidity. At this point, I didn’t care what happened to either one of them; I just wanted the movie to end. As for the ending, it was the most predictable part of the film. And in true Hollywood fashion, they made it possible to continue the story if need be. If this were the 1980’s and I was in school and drunk or high or both, The War With Grandpa might be a bit funnier than it thinks it is. As it stands, this is not the 80’s, but this movie will still appeal to a young audience – a very young audience. Moms and dads will need a special drink or some “funny cigarettes” if they plan on watching this film with the family.
