WHAT’S IT ABOUT

Five teenage mutants — Mirage, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Magik — undergo treatments at a secret institution that will cure them of their dangerous powers. Invited by Dr. Cecilia Reyes to share their stories, their memories soon turn into terrifying realities as they start to question why they’re being held and who’s trying to destroy them.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

If you believe certain signs can help you predict something good or bad is on the horizon, all of the warnings for The New Mutants should have been telling you not to see this train wreck of a movie. On second thought, a train wreck has more action and a point. The New Mutants was a project started in 2015 and, upon completion, supposedly in 2018, was filled with problems. Call it a curse, omen, or just bad luck. Everything about the production of this film said don’t do it. No one paid attention to the obvious, so here we are, 5-years later, with a sub-par mutant movie. As with most movies, they try and pull you in with an action-filled opening scene. Unfortunately, that’s the only real action until the end. According to the official website, it’s categorized as a Horror, Originals, Thriller, and they are kind of right. It’s a horrible, unoriginal, non-thrilling film based on the MARVEL comic series. So I guess I’m not supposed to complain about the lack of an exciting story or characters with believable dialog – my fault. I didn’t know the whole movie would be about five teenagers with mutant powers too stupid to realize they’re actually prisoners. Four of those know precisely what they are capable of but act like preschoolers scared of being in the time-out corner. It’s as if Charles Xavier was turned into a mean stepmother and all he has to do is say “because I said so,” and these mighty mutant kids tuck their tails between their legs. Nothing about The New Mutants makes any sense. Where is this house/hospital located? Why does it look like a mansion on the outside but a reinforced prison on the inside? Where are they getting food from? Why does the radio the doctor uses look like it came from 1940’s Germany? Why are there only five kids in such a big building? I could go on and on, but the real question would still be, Why did they make this movie?
