MOVIESinMO REVIEW
So they decided to start over. . .again. Superman comics have been around since 1938, and apparently, the only story anybody deems fit to reproduce is his origin. Although, in this film, he’s an intern at the daily planet, so at least we didn’t need to sit through his baby rocketship arrival. The animation style’s significant changes and the voice actors took some getting used to but not an issue. There were other mild additions to Superman’s story that try and separate this from the magnitude of others with similar content. I would definitely suggest forgetting about any and all previous narratives if you want to fully enjoy Man of Tomorrow. It is a decent story that gives a more direct approach to the fact that he is an alien, but his overall presence doesn’t seem to bother anyone. Most citizens have a somewhat lackluster attitude throughout the film when confronted by a flying man, a 50-foot monster, or an alien bounty hunter on a flying motorcycle. Where’s the shock and awe? What happened to the panic in the streets? What does it take to impress the people of Metropolis? All that aside, I guess we’re only supposed to focus on Clark. No problem, but what about the other characters in the Superman universe? As I stated earlier, this is a new origin story creating its own canon. Additionally, it’s not just an origin for Kal-El. We see Lois Lane as a rookie reporter wanting to work her way up the ladder. Lex Luther’s evil and selfishness are also seen in the early stage of his career as well. The ill-fated creation of Parasite and introduction “The Main Man” Lobo at the beginning of Clark’s journey continue adding layers to an already overloaded story. Under normal circumstances, that would be a problem, but since this is a direct-to-video production, viewers will have ample time to rewatch whatever they missed or didn’t understand the first time around. Overall, Superman: Man of Tomorrow is a refreshing tale that goes above and beyond to include the genesis of more than one supporting character within the franchise.
