MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Gerard Butler has starred in a wide variety of films, and he always seems to have the same confused but pissed-off look on his face in all of them. Greenland is no exception. This time Gerard is an architect on the mends with his wife and diabetic son, and there’s a colossal comet headed towards the planet. None of those things have anything to do with each other. Still, for the sake of entertainment and wanting to make an original story, the studio felt that would separate it from the other apocalyptic movies. At its core, Greenland is more about the relationship between John and his wife then the appending doom of a life-killing comet. Apparently, the comet named Clarke was so enormous, no scientist or government official on the planet could do anything about the eventual collision. Therefore, a worldwide decision to handpick specific individuals to ensure the human race will continue and thrive was the only choice. This is where John comes in. I didn’t know architects or structural engineers (that’s what John said he was), was a job so essential that the government will save you and your family. That’s right, John (and family) received a text and phone call from an automated government robocall stating they were to come to an airport and be taken away to safety – or as safe as one can be during the destruction of the planet. That’s the primary mission throughout the film. Greenland’s other purpose is to show personal repercussions during a worldwide panic. To separate itself from other “end of the world” films, they demonstrate many dynamics between John, his family, and the surrounding people they come in contact with. These instances are the best parts of the movie. From the time you learn John and his wife have issues with being selected by the government, the problems they face will not win any awards, but it’s worth a watch.
