WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Super spy Lance Sterling and scientist Walter Beckett are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is not. But what Walter lacks in social skills he makes up for in smarts and invention, creating the awesome gadgets Lance uses on his epic missions. But when events take an unexpected turn, Walter and Lance suddenly have to rely on each other in a whole new way. And if this odd couple can’t learn to work as a team, the whole world is in peril.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
For every child that has ever imagined what being a spy must be like, this is your movie. Spies in Disguise has everything every kid pretends to have as a spy. You’re incredibly cool, you never raise your voice, you have a plan for every problem, and most of all, you work alone. That is also how you would describe Lance Sterling. The gadget wielding super-spy forced to work with a smart and science-savvy Walter Beckett. In Spies in Disguise, Lance is changed into a pigeon and must reluctantly work with Walter. The chemistry between them was like watching a new and improved odd couple. Lance being the cold and calculating killer with no other options to defuse a situation. And Walter, the genius inventor that believes there’s always another way besides killing. From the moment they met, it was comedic gold. Seeing Lance adjust after becoming a pigeon was hilarious and being voiced by Will Smith made it that much more humorous. Tom Holland, as Walter was just as amusing, trying to get his point of non-lethal methods across to Sterling. Of course, like all great animated family films, there’s a message. Since Spies in Disguise is a 2019 movie, it highlights 2019 issues. Non-violence – Walter is determined there’s always another way to solve a problem. Acceptance -Walter is called weird by his classmates and co-workers because of his alternative ideas). The need to work together – Lance, like all self-absorbs heroes, feels the need to always work alone. And for some reason, gluten-free – I know some people have issues with gluten, but I didn’t realize pigeons cared either way. I guess that’s just a Walter thing. Overall, if you feel like laughing, Spies in Disguise is a fantastic movie that actually lives up to the hype.
