WHAT’S IT ABOUT
After uncovering a massive conspiracy, an embattled NYPD detective joins a citywide manhunt for two young cop killers. As the night unfolds, he soon becomes unsure of who to pursue — and who’s in pursuit of him. When the search intensifies, authorities decide to take extreme measures by closing all of Manhattan’s 21 bridges to prevent the suspects from escaping.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
I would love to say 21 Bridges is a great movie well worth the wait and hype. That is what I would have said if not for the ending. 21 Bridges is a nice change of pace away from all of the heavily computer-generated graphic films that seem to have taken over everything these past several years. This film relies on story, acting, pace, and all of those things most have forgotten about when it comes to making a movie. On the positive side, the acting is good, the story is ok, and the effects are mainly practical. Once you get past a very dull, slow, and unneeded beginning, the film is excellent. There’s a robbery that goes wrong (or right depending on whose side you’re on). Several cops are killed, which starts a massive manhunt. Criminals that turn on each other, cops that work for the bad guys. The closing of every way on or off Manhattan and massive car chases. That is what gives this film a “higher than it should get” rating of six. Unfortunately, that’s all that can be said on the plus side of the spectrum. For starters, I said the acting is good, but with the actors involved, it should have been outstanding. The pace is rather slow in more than one spot in the film and that’s not acceptable mainly because of the writers Adam Mervis (The Philly Kid) and Matthew Michael Carnahan (World War Z). The director Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones, Luther), and two of the ten producers were the Russo brothers. Then there’s the story. It’s far from original, but that’s never a reason not to like a movie. It’s all about the delivery and as I stated earlier, the story is ok. The execution of the story at the start was above average and should have at least stayed that way. But as they say, all good things come to an end and 21 Bridges ended about 20 minutes before the actual ending. The writing became sloppy and transparent. The actors didn’t seem to care anymore and the conclusion had that “this is all we got” feeling to it. In the end, this is a film no one had to make with a story three other films this year had already used. So, if you really want to see 21 Bridges, just remember, you’ve been warned about an ending a few interns could have written better.
