MOVIESinMO REVIEW
I’m always happy to see a new Denzel performance, but as of late, his talents have been wasted on subpar scripts with mediocre stories that go nowhere. The Little Things is no different. This film has Denzel as a Deputy named Joe Deacon, with a very complicated past. So complicated in fact, his story alone could have been the entire movie. His complications also created more questions and more plot holes regarding his actions throughout the film. Early in the film, Deacon begins sharing information with a Detective Baxter. This guy seemed to be fresh out of the academy and completely unaware of Deacon’s troubled past. As the film progresses, the two officers share information begin to zero in on one individual as the main culprit responsible for all the unexplained deaths of several women in the Los Angeles area. Despite warnings from Baxter’s coworkers, he continues to work with Deacon. This team-up is so wrong and unbelievable on so many levels at times, is almost unbearable. Watching these great actors deliver some of the worse dialogs in one of the slowest movies this year was painful. No one can say they didn’t understand what was going on, considering how much time was spent making sure you fully knew how conflicted Denzel’s character was. There were several other stories thrown in for some reason, but why? Baxter’s story was uneventful, and the “villain” was added so the director could have a way to end this trainwreck. Ultimately, The Little Things was filled with little things that collectively made a big mess.
