MOVIESinMO REVIEW
I love Jackie Chan, and as an actor, he has a lot of great films. Unfortunately, this isn’t one of them. Vanguard had so much potential. The serious part of the story is OK. The film’s comical side is on par with what you would expect from a current Jackie Chan movie. The action is average, and the fight sequences are the only real reason most people watch Jackie Chan films. To be fair, Mr. Chan seems to be more of a secondary character this time. The parts he’s in are better than the rest of the movie, but not by much. The younger cast members are the prominent real stars since they collectively do everything Jackie usually does. Making jokes, being serious, winning fights “by accident,” and that dumbfounded look after something unusual happens. These are all classic Jackie Chan staples done by younger actors. None of this is a bad thing separately, but Vanguard tries to incorporate everything, from silly to severe, in one confusing film. The story is straightforward, but the delivery is all over the place. Some scenes feel like they came out of the best drama ever directed, only to be destroyed by an ill-placed Three Stooges style visual joke. The worst part is that it continues throughout the movie. Sadly, I can only rate this movie on the fight scenes and the vision of what it could have been. Everything else about it sucks.
