MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Gemini Man is a lot more than what it’s advertised as. It’s mainly a drama with science fiction aspects mixed with action. Also, Will Smith does not do anything Fresh Prince-like. For the most part, he plays it straight throughout the film. Even his younger self is serious. As I stated earlier, this is a drama. The plot is simple, but you’re never sure if they’re supposed to be so astringent or if the director realized the movie has become a parody of itself. Once you pass that unforgiving hurdle, there’s the action issue. It looks good, and it’s executed well, but because of the dramatic set-up, the action is out of place and never feels like a part of the film as a whole. Also, most of the action is somewhat predictable because they explained too much in the first half of the film. Usually, that would be ok, but everything moves along at such an erratic pace, the flow of the film becomes somewhat unbearable. There’s talk, then action, then more talk, then unneeded explanations, then almost action. This film was all over the place. Gemini Man could have been a great dramatic film or even a better action movie, but trying to blend the concept of two different styles takes a specific type of writer/director, and it is undeniable the one they had wasn’t the one for the job. From what they used on-screen, Gemini Man should have been a tv series first and then present us with a movie as a grand finale. Let us pretend this one didn’t happen and use it as the inspiration for the real movie.
