WHAT’S IT ABOUT

Phil (Adam DeVine) has a major dependency issue – he’s addicted to his phone. He has no friends, he has a job writing pop culture “Top 10” lists, and his love life is non-existent. But his Facebook status is about to change. When he is forced to upgrade his phone, the latest model comes with an unexpected feature…Jexi (Rose Byrne) – an A.I. life coach, virtual assistant, and cheerleader. With her help, Phil begins to get a real life. But as he becomes less dependent on his phone, Jexi’s artificial intelligence morphs into a tech nightmare determined to keep Phil all to herself, even if it means ruining his chances of finding success

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Jexi is a film of the social media era. Everything about it screams college fun and nothing more. You will not learn anything while watching this movie, although there is a moral. This movie tries to highlight how dependent we, as a nation, are on our phones and to some degree how it can start. Practically every sentence has some form of a curse word in it, and this includes the seemingly sentient phone. It’s a rated “R” film, and I don’t mind bad language, but doing it just because you can is an immediate turn-off. If you can ignore the constant barrage of bad words coming from every character in the movie, you might get the underlying point of the film to understand why the phone is treating its owner the way it does. Several lessons you can’t miss are – don’t give your phone to your kids as a pacifier and don’t encourage your kid’s phone activity. As an adult, if your ONLY friend is your phone, YOU HAVE A PROBLEM. The premise of Jexi is excellent, and it could have been considered a classic if it was done right. Needless to say, the writers decided to go the juvenile route and use every immature trick they could remember from childhood and put it in this movie. If this were an SNL sketch, it would be hilarious for the ten-minute duration, but this is an eighty-minute feature film. After the first twenty-five minutes of cursing and three stooges-like antics, it just plain stupid. As much as they tried to give this film a reason to exist, the language overshadows the point and what you’re left with is something only college students will want to rent to play drinking games.
