MOVIESinMO REVIEW
First and foremost, Overcomer is a Christian film. Don’t look in amazement when people start praying. Don’t act surprised when they start quoting bible verses. This is a Christian family drama, and I would expect no less than to see, hear, and be continuously reminded of how great God is within the two-hours of this movie’s playing time. The stories of Overcomer are about a basketball coach dreading having to coach track. An asthmatic young girl that becomes the entire track team. A blind man in the hospital with past regrets. A principal with faith and a grandmother holding on to hatred. They all come together in a very predictable way but the way there is very enjoyable. The acting is believable, and unlike other religious films, the dialog doesn’t feel forced. Overcomer is not a great film, it suffers from a lot of amateur mistakes, but what makes this movie worth seeing is its messages of forgiveness and hope. The coach wants to give up because most of his teams’ families are moving out of town. He needed to redirect his faith and his priorities. The young girl named Hannah is new to the area, and regardless of her asthma, has low self-esteem and thinks running is all she can do. This is also her way of connecting to a father she never met before she is introduced to a father that has always been there. There’s the principal with newfound faith willing to share and help those in need. Lastly, Hannah’s grandmother, who works two jobs. She loves her granddaughter but dispises the conditions that created her situation. Yes, this movie will shove the bible down your throat, but it’s supposed to, it’s a Christian film, and I would be surprised if it didn’t. Overcomer will not will the Academy Award for anything, but it will make you feel good by exposing you to a better world filled with people that communicate with each other in person NOT on their phone. A world where people care about each other and color is not a factor. Sadly, a world like this doesn’t exist because of our screwed-up priorities and faith given to the all-mighty dollar. Overcomer does what any good movie is supposed to do, pull you into its world and for the next two hours, make you believe everyone cares, and everything will work out as long as you have faith.
