MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Don’t Let Go is a mind-bending drama with a thrilling, sci-fi time-altering concept. The story seems to start a bit slow, but that may be because of the anticipated time-bending part that most people know about from the trailer. The main story this film rides on is the close relationship between Detective Jack Radcliff (David Oyelowo) and his niece, Ashley Radcliff (Storm Reid). Because of Ashley’s unpredictable father, Jack’s brother Garret, Jack tries to make sure his niece is OK. It might appear weird at first, but once the full dynamic is exposed, you start to understand why Jack is on call if Ashley needs to talk. When Jack receives a call from Ashley, she is in danger, but lousy reception made it impossible for Jack to hear her. This compelled him to make a home visit. At this point, Jack discovers the deaths of his brother, his brothers’ wife, and his niece. Devastated, he understandably takes some time off work. Now for the sci-fi part. This is where you need to pay close attention. This is also where a lot of films with time-altering premises fail. Movies like Back to the Future, The Langoliers, and Avengers: Endgame, have that one person to explain how it works. Without that narrative, we are left with our own time-based ideas, thoughts, and assumptions. When the time issue in Don’t Let Go begins, the audience is just as lost as Detective Jack. His reaction when he receives a call from his dead niece is priceless. Personally, I would not have answered the phone (would have been a short movie), but he did – eventually. This is when “that person” explains how this phone thing works. Not this time. The narrative is created as the movie progresses, and we learn as Jack learns. This gives the film a more thrilling and unpredictable story. We are Jack. When Jack is lost and confused, so are we. There are so many things to love about this film. The bad guys are evil. The good guys are questionable, and the time concept changed at one point, so everything we thought we knew, changed. If you love movies that hand-feed you all the information, you will hate this one. But if you’re willing to be challenged with a sci-fi thriller style whodunit, Don’t Let Go should be on your must-see list.
