WHAT’S IT ABOUT

Red, Chuck, Bomb, and the rest of their feathered friends are surprised when a green pig suggests that they put aside their differences and unite to fight a common threat. Aggressive birds from an island covered in ice are planning to use an elaborate weapon to destroy the fowl and swine way of life. After picking their best and brightest, the birds and pigs come up with a scheme to infiltrate the island, deactivate the device and return to their respective paradises intact.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Before my review of Angry Birds, I need to first mention the 5-minute animated short that came before it, Hair Love. A film about an African American father attempting to style his very young daughters hair. In the short, a girl named Zuri tries to do her own hair while watching a video on her moms natural-hair vlog site. Ultimately her father is given the task after seeing his daughter’s epic fail. This short displays more emotion than most full-length movies ever have, and I expect Hair Love to walk away a winner at the next Academy Award ceremony. On to the central review.

The first thing you notice about The Angry Birds Movie 2, is the welcomed lack of an explanation. The first movie spent too much time stopping the action to over-explain the story. This time the writers used the success of their previous film to keep the story going without damaging the pace of the story. There were times when an explanation was warranted, but that was for the viewers who hadn’t seen the first film. The other noticeable difference was the undeniable second story. The main story involving Red, the hero that saved everyone as determined by the occupants of Bird Island, and a story used mainly as filler comprising of three young birds playing Pigs vs. Birds. This second story seemed to be a direct off-story distraction similar to Scrat, that squirrel, rat creature from the Ice Age franchise. As for the main story, it was leaps and bounds above its predecessor.  First, they never stopped the action just to explain the story. Second, nearly every joke or statement had double meanings. This was a call back to the early days of animation like Looney Tunes where the double entendres were standard. Angry Birds 2 uses this to its advantage expertly.  And third, the story is so much better. There’s an underlying story of acceptance that’s a carryover from the previous movie. Now, that story serves as the driving force of this one. Our main hero, Red, and the rest of the team have a more pressing issue that forces them into a frenemy situation with the pigs. This new team-up is hilarious. The constant one-ups between Red and Leonard, the Pigs leader, never got old. Additionally, this movie didn’t rely on one character. Every main bird and pig had something to say that added to the continued hilarity of the film. Angry Birds Movie 2 might have started out as a movie made for kids, but the writers definitely had adults in mind for the finished products.
