WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Aladdin is a lovable street urchin who meets Princess Jasmine, the beautiful daughter of the sultan of Agrabah. While visiting her exotic palace, Aladdin stumbles upon a magic oil lamp that unleashes a powerful, wisecracking, larger-than-life genie. As Aladdin and the genie start to become friends, they must soon embark on a dangerous mission to stop the evil sorcerer Jafar from overthrowing young Jasmine’s kingdom.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Once again Disney is unnecessarily producing live versions of their classics. This time they have corrupted Aladdin. The original 1992 version was and still is the best version with tremendous help from the great Robin Williams. If you’ve seen the original version, then you know the songs, especially the one’s Mr. Williams sings, are classics now. These songs, including A Friend Like Me, are performed by Will and at first, listen, they sound very weird by comparison. The writers should have spent a little time to produce better versions of the original soundtrack songs or at least find artists with equally as strong voices. Even “A Whole New World” sounded weak and under-produced.
There were slight changes made, but unless you want a scene for scene copy, they were somewhat needed as they tried to close a few plot holes and give the movie a more credible story. Will Smith is a great actor loaded with personality, but with no help from the rest of the cast, he is, unfortunately, the best thing about this remake. I know a lot of people had strong opinions about Mr. Smith as the blue genie when they saw the trailer, but when you see his performance in the film, it’s not that bad. I will admit it takes some time to get used to a blue Will Smith (anybody blue looks weird), but his performance is still the best by comparison. He really shines in his human form, and this is also the best parts of the film. As for Aladdin (Mena Massoud), he was as expected A newcomer with no real skills and very forgettable performance. Naomi Scott as Jasmine was just as dull.
Along with the extreme CGI overload (monkey, tiger, etc.) Aladdin suffers from a weak script, poor acting, and outstanding visuals that go nowhere. So if you have 2 hours to waste or you’re just curious about what Disney did to another one of their classics, this is the movie for you.
