WHAT’S IT ABOUT

Members of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species thought to be mere myths rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

I can’t believe they made an American sequel to a so-so American movie of a famous Asian monster. As history can and will tell, anytime the U.S. decides to make or remake a film made famous by another country (Ghost in the Shell, Kite, the Upside, etc.), they (we) ruin it. They add too much, take away too much, change the race of the characters, you name it. If American producers and directors want to copy it, it will be destroyed and Godzilla: King of the Monsters is no different. Right from the start, they unapologetically assume you have seen the first film, Godzilla (2014). Regardless if you have, this movie still makes no sense. Even in a fantasy world, it’s hard to believe most of everything happening. For starters, if anyone wants to try and understand this movie, all earthly logic has to be thrown out the window. How has the earth been harboring over seventeen monsters since the beginning of time? How are they still alive? How are there so many “tunnels.” crisscrossing beneath the soil from one continent to the next? Either earth is more massive than we think it is or it’s hollow. Also, aren’t most of the monsters in Godzilla radioactive? Once again, they should not be that hard to find. Plus, if any human got too close, they would be exposed and die. This movie suffers from a lot of the same problems that plague the Transformers franchise. Too much action for something so big. Unless you’re a ten-year-old kid, it’s tough to believe objects that big can move just as fast as a karate master. You can’t make your creatures look as real as possible but give them cartoon-like attributes. As a person that grew up looking at those old monster movies, I’m thoroughly disappointed with what Hollywood has been doing with them. It seems like making movies with creatures bigger than buildings is very complicated. I couldn’t enjoy the movie without wondering how anything was possible. To be fair, even if they were on that Avitar planet, this movie would still suck. Here’s an idea, stop worrying about how great your monsters look and trying to make me believe how they exist and just make the script better. Before all these fantastic special effects, studios had to rely on good scripts and great acting. Let’s try that next time.
