MOVIESinMO REVIEW
I love the DC animated movies, but lately, it seems as if they’re getting a bit lazy. The animation is top-notch, and it’s great when they bring a classic comic story to life. I found this movie to have at least three important things that almost ruined an otherwise excellent piece of animation. The first noticeable problem was their voices. When studios change voice actors that, for the most part, sound completely different from previous films, this destroys the continuity and kills the mood. Unless the characters are in a different country, the voices should stay the same or at least close. Whenever the studio decides to replace Mark Hamill as the Joker, they don’t have any problems getting someone that sounds similar. It seems for this film, the producers didn’t try to find anyone close to sounding like what we, as the audience, have become used to hearing. To be fair, the voice performances were excellent, once you accept the differences. The next problem is the length of the film. Batman: Hush is a 12-issue comic from 2003 crammed into an 80-minute feature. So they did what all studios do. They took the best parts, altered the story slightly, and surprisingly made it work. I would have loved this to be a trilogy or at least a two-film adaptation, but since they didn’t screw it up too bad, I’m Ok with it. As for the parts they kept, they should have expanded on the Batman/Catwoman romance. This is by far the most intriguing part of the movie outside of the whole “who is Hush” mystery. The rest of the story has its moments filled with side plots and tons of cameos from other villains and heroes. Then there’s the ending. Considering everything Batman goes through to find out who Hush is, the conclusion isn’t as climactic as it should be. Finally, because this is a mystery that relies heavily on the ultimate reveal, (much like The Sixth Sense), once you know who Hush is, the desire to watch it again is very low.
