WHAT’S IT ABOUT

Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son, Tim, to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces to unravel the tangled mystery.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

For a series that started with one-hundred fictional characters, Pokémon has come a long way in its twenty-two-year history. So after 122 games, 18 movies, and tons of cards, books, and merchandise there’s finally a live-action movie, and Pokémon Detective Pikachu is the ultimate Pokemon movie. Almost everything a lover of the series could want after 22 years. Almost. Detective Pikachu is visually stunning, and they made sure to include practically every Pokémon in their 807 character catalog. They used their powers, they said their names, there was even a Poké Ball. So what’s wrong with this film? The story, the plot, the weak 1980’s synopsis. Is this the best they could do after 22 years? Writers have produced better scripts in less than a month. It seems the studio only wanted to show how realistic they could make the characters look on the big screen and thought that would satisfy the movie-going crowd. Short answer, if you’re a Pokémon fan, you will love seeing your favorite characters or seeing if you can name all the ones you see. For the average movie-goer without extensive knowledge of Pokémon, this movie is rather ordinary. I personally know about ten Pokémon, and once I saw them on the screen, all I had left was the rest of an OK movie. Sure, Ryan Reynolds was funny as Pikachu, but that was it. Having to watch Justice Smith as Tim Goodman was painful. His acting, along with all the other actors, was so one-dimensional. The detective was your standard stereotype. Junior reporter Lucy Stevens was the typical reporter intern stereotype. The list goes on. As I stated earlier, I’m not a big Pokémon fan, but I do enjoy movies. It’s very apparent that Ryan Reynolds is the savior of this film, but without being a fan of the series, Ryan just makes it bearable but not enough to make it any more appealing.
