MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Here we go again. Another Disney villain made evil by someone or something that happened in their past. According to the Disney formula, something tragic has to happen when the person is very young. Well, that’s not entirely true for Cruella. She was a bit demented from birth, but you still empathize with Estella through the magic of great storytelling. Every minute of this more than 2-hour film was used to transform the evil dog-napping old clothing designer we all know from 101 Dalmations into a misunderstood, lovely young woman with authority issues. I enjoyed the retelling, but the overall pace was slow and longwinded in some parts. The acting was superb, and even the dogs were on point. But that huge runtime was grossly unnecessary. As great as Emma Stone is as Cruella, watching her have a pity party for more than an hour gets old fast. For what it’s worth, Cruella is a good movie, but the premise is the problem. I rated this movie as a standalone story without the attachment of the classic it took its idea from. With that in mind, the negative list becomes a lot smaller, and you might be able to enjoy this film a bit more. I know that’s not how Disney wants it. Still, I suppose they want people to appreciate this film entirely. In that case, they should not compare it to any movie from Disney’s past because doing so allows you to realize just how stupid of a concept Cruella actually is.
