WHAT’S IT ABOUT
In the adorably different town of Uglyville, weirdness is celebrated, strangeness is special, and beauty is embraced as more than meets the eye. After traveling to the other side of a mountain, Moxy and her UglyDoll friends discover Perfection — a town where more conventional dolls receive training before entering the real world to find the love of a child. Soon, the UglyDolls learn what it means to be different — ultimately realizing that they don’t have to be perfect to be amazing.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
I’m not sure why Hollywood thought this was a good idea. Didn’t they get this out of their system with TROLLS? Nevertheless, UglyDolls is here, and it’s not that bad. . . . if you’re a child. If you’re a child, this is a great movie. It’s colorful, it’s has singing and dancing, and it’s funny. As an adult, it’s painfully cute, the songs may get stuck in your head (thank goodness it’s not that shark song), and it teaches a good lesson about acceptance. Every character is somewhat one-dimensional, but they’re all needed, and for this movie, it works. There’s Ugly Dog, the outgoing party animal that’s ready for anything. Babo, the muscle of the group. He’s friendly, reliable, and carries stuff. The smart-mouth one is Wage, a baker that has to have the last word – no matter how negative it is. Lucky Bat is the village-wise man for some reason. Ox is Uglyville’s mayor, and Moxy is the VERY optimistic, today is the day, dreamer. She wants to go to the “Big World” to be a child’s loving toy, and every day is going to be the day. All of her positivity is so upbeat and sweet, it could send an adult into a diabetic coma. Her fellow residents, tired of her super can-do attitude, decide to help her on her mission to find the fabled “Big World.” This is when they see “the Institute of Perfection.” This introduces a new bunch of characters that are, according to them, perfect. The main “perfect” doll is Lou, and he is not the best doll to be friends with. The Uglydolls are put through various tests to prove their worthiness, and Moxy continues to be positive. So for the remainder of the movie, more lessons are learned, the positive attitudes are running thin, and some vital information is discovered. Just when this film almost became a “normal” movie, it ramps-up the sweetness and hits the positivity high note. I don’t remember any time in my life when I was ever as happy as the dolls are in this movie, so I’m not exactly sure who they made Uglydolls for. My best guess would be a child around four or five. That’s right around the age you realize bad things can happen, and you can’t get everything you want no matter how hard you try.
