MOVIESinMO REVIEW
A good movie with a decent message but a somewhat step backward for the DC Animated Universe. Justice Society: World War II has a very basic and rough intro that (myself included) could turn off a lot of loyal DC fans. The story is almost compelling, but the PG13 rating guarantees that what they could have done, didn’t get done because they want the message of “You’re not promised tomorrow” to be heard by a larger demographic. And trying to convey that message cost everyone a better, more in-depth story. They gave us a snippet of each hero via a reel to reel shown to President Roosevelt during a briefing on the current condition of the war. We also get a little taste of each hero’s powers, but we’re still left in the dark regarding the actual abilities of the Justice Society. Other than the less than 5-minute intro at the beginning, nothing is really known besides their name. The JS consists of Hourman, Jay Garrick (The Flash), Black Canary, Hawkman, and Wonder Woman. The other heroes in this movie are Barry Allen, Superman, Dr. Fate, Aquaman, and Steve Trevor. Brainiac, The Advisor, and Hitler, and the Nazis, are the only bad guys during this World War II geared film. As the story progressed, it became more and more convoluted and nonsensical, but the message of “tomorrow’s not guaranteed” was continuous. As stated above, this is a PG13 rated movie, so there’s practically no bloodshed or graphic images that adequately portray war. That downgrade from an “R” rating was the first and biggest mistake that ultimately hurts the believability of a film containing multiple explosions, giant creatures, and gunfire everywhere. The next mistake was not utilizing The Justice Society. Over half of the movie featured Wonder Woman and The Flash. The other’s were mere background characters used to move the story to the next Wonder Woman or The Flash scene. The movie is called Justice Society: World War II. That means it should be about The Justice Society, not just Wonder Woman. Overall, it’s a good story with a great message, better suited for a very young audience.
