WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s Unbreakable, from Touchstone, and 2016’s Split, from Universal—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: Glass. From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast. Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.
MOVIESinMO Review
I really don’t like M. Night Shyamalan’s movies, and other than The Sixth Sense, he has always failed to impress me. Glass is no different. Why does he feel it necessary to explain EVERYTHING? We don’t need to know what every character is thinking all the time. You would think after the first two movies, this one could be action-packed since there’s nothing more to explain. Wrong. This movie, just like the other two, is nothing but person after person dialoguing about their plan or some connection to what just happened by comparison to comic books and comic book characters. Also, like the other two, the real “action” is in the last fifteen minutes of the movie. This extremely slow-moving film feels more like a college thesis than a Hollywood movie. If this were a book, it would have no problem being the number one best seller because it is very wordy. As a movie, not so much. The blueprint for how to make a successful superhero movie has been done. Just watch any Disney/Marvel movie produced in the last ten years. So why does M. Night have such a hard time telling an interesting comic book story? Unbreakable, Split, and now Glass. Three strikes – your out. Will someone please tell this man to stop because apparently, making movies IS NOT his specialty.
