WHAT’S IT ABOUT

Old-school magic meets the modern world when young Alex stumbles upon the mythical sword Excalibur. He soon unites his friends and enemies into a band of knights who join forces with the legendary wizard Merlin. Together, they must save mankind from the wicked enchantress Morgana and her army of supernatural warriors.

MOVIESinMO Review

First and foremost, this is a family movie geared towards kids. The first thirty minutes tells you everything you need to know about King Auther and the knights of the round table, the two main protagonists, the antagonists, and the overall tone of the film. Alex Elliot and his best friend Bedders are the “chosen ones” in a world that has fallen apart and inadvertently made it easier for evil to take over. The messages in this film are clear and straightforward. There’s nothing to decipher and no hidden messages. As I stated earlier, this is a kids’ movie. The acting is great and the action is never too scary for your average third grader. The lesson in this film teaches everyone how a good person should be, no matter old. As an adult, I felt the overall story was a bit drawn out, but this was merely to help over-explain the story assuming the main audience is kids. Also, the messages that only adults will get are just as clear. In other words, this movie directly mirrors a lot of issues facing England (and America) today. No one agrees on anything, evil seems to outweigh good, the country is divided, and things need to change. Overall, this is not a movie that will keep those hyperactive kids in their seats but it will keep the attention of the ones that like to think or feel like an adult. Lastly, The Kid Who Would Be King will be loved by kids and liked by adults.
