MoviesInMo Review

This is a near-perfect family movie. It’s filled with humor, heart and a message. Instant Family tells the (mostly true) story of a couple adopting three kids. From the moment Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Beth (Rose Byrne) decide to adopt a child, this film becomes one heart filled joke after the next. Pete and Beth say out loud, and to each other, what most people would only say in private and only to themselves. “Why did we do this?” “What were we thinking?” “Let’s give them back.” “But we do love the attention and praise.” This is just a small dose of what comes from the mouths of Pete and Beth. Are they horrible people? Of course not. In addition to their support group and family, they take us on an emotional rollercoaster filled with nearly every parental fear and stereotype we could think of. The only downside is the adoption process weighs more heavily on the adoptees than they could show in a comedic movie. Realistically, as adults, you should know the system is a bitch to navigate through and it can/will turn your life upside down as shown in several parts of this film. In the end, Instant Family does an excellent job of bringing foster care and adoption to the forefront of social consciousness.
