MOVIESinMO REVIEW

With the hopes of being a perfect zombie flick, they lost focus somewhere around the 10-minute mark. Suddenly, it became some serious storytelling drama trying to convince me to care about a piece of crap team. It was like watching season nine of The Walking Dead. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but more of a comparison for reference. Army of the Dead was supposed to be equal to, if not better than Dawn of the Dead. Unfortunately, it was neither. It was completely unbalanced. The opening was the standard zombie setup; how it starts, how it spreads, and its central location – perfect. Now, let us introduce everybody as slowly and dramatically fulfilling as possible for the next two-thirds of the movie. Finally, we shall end this film with a poorly scripted semi-action-filled last scene that didn’t surprise anyone. That’s it, the movie’s over, roll the credits. To be fair, the action scenes were acceptable, and the unnecessary drama needed some work, but it too was passable. Putting them together in this film was the problem. If this were an episode of a zombie series, it would have been great because I would have time to learn and care about the characters. Army of the Dead is 2 hours, 28 minutes long, and nearly two hours of it is used on character development for at least eight people. It took Marvel ten years and over twelve movies for you to care about six characters. So how did Zack Snyder think he could focus on more than two people in a single film and have it make sense? Simply put – Army of the Dead isn’t a bad movie. It just does not live up to the hype.
