Just when you thought DC would lighten up and be more like Marvel, they must have said screw that. The Batman is three R-rated hours of the darkest cinematic version of the cape vigilante to date. He’s not the only dark character in the film. The mobsters, including the Penguin, most of the police force, and the Riddler (of course), are seriously hard-core. It’s Bruce’s second year as the Batman, but this film has so much drama that it’s easy to forget that this is supposed to be a superhero movie. The Batman is the only person in recognizable clothing. I’m not sure what to call the stuff the Riddler wore. It looked like a shabby coat, sweat pants, gloves, and a mask that would put S&M lovers to shame. As for the plot, it was overly dramatic, but it fit the extremely dark theme. There’s Catwoman, the thief that steals from the rich and keeps it for herself with a little going towards whatever cause she feels passionate about. Her role in this film was pointless and used mainly to distract from the violence seen throughout. The Penguin was another useless character. He was there because he’s the Penguin. Everybody is secondary. Even Bruce Wayne was a secondary character. This movie was all about the Batman and the Riddler. Right at the opening, you get the sense that the Riddler is just as crazy and unstable as the Joker but without the need to be seen. He’s out to unmask the corruption of Gotham by leaving clues to the police for the Batman. And each clue has a body count just because. Meanwhile, the Batman is chasing the clues while being shot at, attacked by thugs, and hated by most of the police force. So, if you want to see a gritty, dark, and dramatic movie that just happens to have a masked vigilante in it, go see The Batman. My only real gripe is, why did it have to be 3 hours long?
