What’s It About
For Evan McCauley (Mark Wahlberg), skills he has never learned and memories of places he has never visited haunt his daily life. Self-medicated and on the brink of a mental breakdown, Evan is sought by a secret group that call themselves “Infinites,” revealing to him that his memories may be real—but they are from multiple past lives.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Most of us only give a movie ten minutes to impress us. Infinite passed that test. The next twenty minutes were also action-filled, but the story starts to get a bit complex as they try and explain their version of reincarnation. Now is the time to turn your brain off and enjoy the craziness. Several doctors have diagnosed Evan (Mark Wahlberg) as having schizophrenic in addition to hallucinations. He has unexplainable skills very vivid in his memories. So when he’s told it’s all because he has lived multiple lives, he goes through the entire emotional gambit of denial . . . within five minutes. At this point, Infinite has become so much harder to believe, even as a fantasy film. Too many plot points with too many characters to follow. Although they did focus on two (eventually), they left the stories of the other characters in limbo. Why? All common sense and hopes of saving this film were gone. Apparently, the director thought the same thing, and the plot holes got more prominent. Evan was still the key person of the film, but since he was reincarnated repeatedly, the others like him (Infinites) called him by his last incarnations name for some reason. Then there are the “bad” Infinites that are so tired of living, they want to destroy every living thing on the planet. They have a particular bullet that allows them to “kill” the good Infinites as they search for the weapon that will destroy all life. Why didn’t they use it on themselves? This movie created so many questions, and honestly, after twenty minutes in, I didn’t care anymore. To put this in perspective – the effects in The Fast and the Furious franchise seem doable by comparison.
