WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Denzel Washington returns to one of his signature roles in the first sequel of his career. Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed – but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Denzel is back as The Equalizer, Robert McCall. Right from the start, Robert is obviously undercover. After a few cryptic words from our hero, the action begins, and we find out why he’s still a badass. Once that scene ends, the film slows down to give us narratives of all the important players and continues to do this throughout the movie whenever the director feels we need to know more about the person or people involved. Most of these “stop the action” stories were interestingly informative and helped build a stronger story and gives you a reason to care about the main characters. So we find out what Robert did in the past, his friends, his family, and his moral compass. Just as in the first film, several plots are happening at one time, and most of them interconnect. This action movie is reminiscent of Law Abiding Citizen, Shooter, Taken, and Leon: The Professional. They all have a guy with skills that proves Karma is a bitch. So yes, this film is loaded with plotholes but to be fair, the television show they got this from had loads of unbelievable storylines plus the TV actor was an older British guy (Edward Woodward). The film has some great action, but the build-up to the action was a problem in a few places. The Equalizer 2 plays like the middle movie of a trilogy, and even though Denzel plays his part perfectly, unless they make a part 3, this movie is all a waste of time.
