MOVIESinMO REVIEW
This movie has two apparent problems set before it. The first is the problem with movies like Sing 2 that rely on music to help tell its story. Finding a large enough audience that loves, likes, or at least knows the songs is a challenge. Problem two – it’s a sequel. That doesn’t always pose an issue, but Sing 2 relies heavily on your knowledge of the character’s previous film’s performances. Without knowing who these characters are or why they are, is a significant disadvantage on the like-ability chart, and ticket sales will suffer because of it. BUT, if you have seen the first movie and/or you love/like the music, then Sing 2 is a fantastic film. It has a simple yet drawn-out explanation of how you should believe in yourself and not let others tell you what you can or cannot do. That’s the running theme throughout the film. And since this movie is musically driven, most of the story is conveyed through song, and there are tons of songs. As in the first movie, Buster is still trying to reach the success he feels he needs. Rosita is back, living the dream she gave up as a teen to become a mother and wife. Johnny is better than before but still not as confident as he should be by now. Meena’s over her stage fright, but now she has a new phobia. Ash is the most stable out of the group, but she’s dealing with sexual prejudices as a solo female rocker. Gunter’s still Gunter, and Miss Crawly hasn’t changed. Nana Noodleman, Norman, and the newbies to this film’s cast of characters all play important and meaningful parts. In my opinion, regardless of whether you know the songs or not, it’s a good story. Besides, some of the songs, like the main inspirational one, are old enough (I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For is 34 yrs old) for most people to know by now.
