What’s It About
Everyone’s favorite spooky family is back in the animated comedy sequel, The Addams Family 2. In this all-new movie, we find Morticia and Gomez distraught that their children are growing up, skipping family dinners, and totally consumed with “scream time.” To reclaim their bond they decide to cram Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, and the crew into their haunted camper and hit the road for one last miserable family vacation. Their adventure across America takes them out of their element and into hilarious run-ins with their iconic cousin, IT, as well as many new kooky characters. What could possibly go wrong?

Here it is, another Addams Family animated feature. And for all those that liked the first one, you can expect the same level of mediocrity. This time the main focus settles on their daughter, Wednesday. The story was a little interesting as it showcased her on a mission to locate a family according to her definition. The parents, mainly Gomez, felt distant from their kids and made the stereotypical parental decision to cram the family into a camper to reconnect. In another scene, Uncle Fester became part of Wednesday’s science project. Pugsley is regularly used and tortured by Wednesday. Morticia and Gomez’s parental qualifications are tested by Wednesday. Lurch became the full-time bodyguard for Wednesday. And cousin It was only in the movie so they could say Snoop Dogg was part of the cast. Like I stated earlier, this movie is all about Wednesday. She’s a very drab, one-dimensional, masochistic character that has no place in a film meant for kids. In retrospect, she acts like her parents but without a life-respecting filter. She enjoys the idea of maiming and physically hurting others, especially her brother. In Addams Family 2, she questions her relation as an Addams. Her doubts send her on a mission of self-discovery and mainly predictable antics. Surprisingly, Lurch had one of the best scenes in the movie. As a matter of fact, every character had a stand-out scene that easily outshined anything Wednesday did. So why was she the focus? Were the writers trying to appeal to a younger demographic by using a totally unhinged grade-schooler? It’s clear that the message is family. The way they chose to show it is very questionable. In the end, if you’re an Addams Family fan, more power to you. For everyone else, there will soon be an animated feature starring Dracula that’s much better.
