What’s It About
In Turning Red, Mei Lee is a confident, dorky thirteen-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. And as if changes to her interests, relationships, and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda!
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Lately, Pixar has been failing in the “really gotta see this” department. But with the release of Turning Red, it looks like they made some very positive changes. It’s another original story that I can only compare to The Mitchells vs. the Machines, in reference to the sporadically updated and non-stop antics that will keep the attention of any kid or adult. The story is simple, set in 2002 Canada, most of it is told through metaphors, as Mei Lee has just turned 13, and with minimal warning, puberty hits. Mei Lee’s entire life is flipped. She went from being a “by the rules” compliant and honest daughter to a boy-liking, truth-bending, normal twenty-first-century almost-teen. Once Mei Lee’s mother realizes her daughter does not need feminine items but has turned into a big red panda, mom is both relieved and horrified. Apparently, the panda thing happens to all the women of this family. As the story continues, you start to realize how important this movie is too young girls everywhere. Turning Red is not just about a panda curse. It’s about growing up. It’s about a little girl becoming her own person while still respecting her parents – mainly her mother. In my opinion, this is one of those movies you use to get your point across either as a parent trying to show her kids what respect looks like or as a kid showing your parents what it’s like to be smothered. As we all know, both sides have good intentions. Turning Red presents us with that rare thing called compromise.
