What’s It About

Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Another film by the famous James Wan. Out of over 30 films he either wrote, directed, or produced, I can only say I enjoyed about four of them, and this ain’t one of them. Malignant is a horror film filled with a mixed bag of occasional lousy acting, unnecessary jump scenes, and some very obvious inconsistencies involving a very nimble creature. Right from the start, Malignant had potential, but within the first five minutes, the entire plot was given away. Not directly, but with the images shown during the opening introduction after the opening scene. That’s not the worse part. The problem is watching how horrible of a story it is. Madison, the main character, is shown as a troubled child, and twenty-eight years later, she’s a pregnant adult in an abusive relationship. Later, her sister visits her, they visit their mom, some killings happen, the police get involved, and the story gets more and more unnecessarily convoluted. Apparently, Madison has visions of the murders as they happen, and during this time, she is completely paralyzed until it’s over. Once the sisters tell the police of the visions and who they think committed the crimes, the police don’t believe them, of course. As the film progresses, the more you find out, the dumber the movie gets. Now the killer is Madison’s imaginary friend that has come to life. And naturally, no one believes here even after one detective fought it, chased it, and ultimately lost it. Meanwhile, the story is getting dumber, the dialog has become lazier, and any chance of a climatic anything was lost in the stupidity a long time ago.
