WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Young Keda tries to survive alone in the wilderness after he’s left for dead during his first hunt with his Cro-Magnon tribe. He soon forms an unlikely alliance with a lone wolf that was abandoned by its pack. Facing overwhelming odds and nonstop danger, Keda, and the wolf must now trek through a harsh and unforgiving landscape to make it home before winter.
MoviesInMo Review
I can’t believe this movie got the green light. Apparently the production company, Columbia or the distribution company, Sony had some money they didn’t want. Alpha has some really good-looking scenes as I’m quite sure most people that will see this film are looking for. As for the acting – it all comes down to a look. Let me explain. This film is set after the first ice age, 20,000 years ago, in Europe. With that fact in mind, you might expect to see cave people riding mammoths. You might think there will be a lot of grunts and moans by those same cave people wearing pieces of animal skins. If this is what you thought, you would be wrong. The tribe shown has a language. They also have clothing and some of it looks better than what’s available today. They are also very well-groomed. So about 20 minutes in, all realism is out the window. What you learn from the trailer is that Keda, the young hunter, is abandoned and becomes friends with a wolf. What you find out by seeing the film is just how boring that is to watch. For over ninety minutes, I listened to the tribe and Keda speak while I read the screen (Yes, the entire movie is subtitled). I saw all the close-ups of everyone’s face so they could express different emotions. I saw the vast countryside and mountains in the summer, fall, and winter. I saw everything except a movie worth watching. Alpha would be perfect as still pictures but as a film, it sucks. The entire script could fit on one sheet of paper and the performances by the animals were ten times better than the people.
