MOVIESinMO REVIEW
After years of waiting, Doctor Strange 2 is out, and the verdict is MEH. Disney assumes everyone has seen every movie, streaming Disney+ show, and maybe a few comic books before seeing this one. That would explain why they rely so heavily on the multiverse. It’s their way out of the proverbial corner they wrote themselves into when they decided to expand on it during Spider-Man: No Way Home. Then there’s the Loki series if you want to know about variants. Watching the What If… animated series also helps explain a small chunk of Doctor Strange 2. Lastly, there’s the limited series WandaVision. Viewing that show helps understand the significance of this film. There are more shows and movies to guide your knowledge, and having seen those things does improve the quality of this movie. But even after all that pre-learning, DS2 is still a lot to digest. The film had so much promise when it started. Showing an epic chase scene with Strange and some young girl, how could things go wrong. The story is all over the place as it tries to explain what and why everything is happening, plus introduce a slew of new-to-the-screen characters. Unless you’re into all Marvel comic books, you’ll have no idea who the young girl Dr. Strange is trying to protect during the opening chase. Her identity and powers are told slowly throughout the movie. Although the girl is the main reason everything is happening, the path getting to that point is practically pointless. When you finally find out the girl is America Chavez, a character created in 2011, she’s nothing like the comics have made her. In the movie, she’s an annoying, clueless, whiny, little girl with multiverse travel powers she can’t control, but everybody wants. So for 2-hours, I watched Dr. Strange try and save a confused girl while dealing with his own shortcomings. The special effect wasn’t that special, and the overall story relies heavily on the moviegoer’s previous Marvel knowledge.
