MOVIESinMO REVIEW
After waiting for what felt like forever, it’s finally here, another Jordan Peele film shrouded in mystery. Most people were amazed when they saw the movies Get Out, Us, and those new episodes of Twilight Zone on CBS All Access. Get Out was shocking because our imaginations thought it was something other than what it was, and when we learned the truth, our minds were blown. His next film invoked fantasy in such a way that we started looking at each other in a different light. We get that when Jordan writes, produces, and directs a project. So when he does a new film, we really want to see it. Unfortunately, his other films raised the bar so high that it was practically impossible to reach that level of greatness no matter how good the film would have been. Nope was doomed to be mediocre at best. But Nope has a slower, more contrived build-up to the big reveal. In the trailers, people are looking up, and in later trailers, we see a UFO. Once again, our imaginations take over, and most of us have already pieced together an entire film based on what we think it is. And once again, Mr. Peele did not disappoint. Everything we thought it was, it wasn’t. This is not a movie that many people will love mainly because of the pace. Compared to his other films, Nope is a snore-fest. It’s not a bad film, it’s just not comparable to his other works. This time it’s all mental. All great movies give us those bits of information that we can process later while still entertaining us with whatever we may be watching. Jordan’s films do that easily, but this one seems to rely solely on seeing and deciphering those types of messages as they happen. There lies the main problem. You find yourself recalling something from earlier, hoping to understand a current action. Add in an unexpectedly slow pace, a couple of main actors with totally opposite personalities, and a big reveal that will leave you underwhelmed, and there you have it. To be fair, Nope is still a great movie. It was just released at the wrong time. In an era of instant gratification, Nope is far too mental.
