What’s It About
Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon), two thirty-year-old best friends in Los Angeles, are thrust unexpectedly into an international conspiracy when Audrey’s ex-boyfriend shows up at their apartment with a team of deadly assassins on his trail. Surprising even themselves, the duo jump into action, on the run throughout Europe from assassins and a suspicious-but-charming British agent, as they hatch a plan to save the world.
MoviesInMo Review
Every actor in the movie seems like a stereotypical caricature of the character they are portraying. Although, to be fair this 2-hour film is aimed at young women with just enough action to keep men interested. The jokes are at times flat and at all times crude, but after the first half hour, you get used to it. So, Audrey (Mila Kunis) and her best friend Morgan (Kate McKinnon) get caught up in international cover-ups and assassinations because Audrey finds out her ex is a spy. Being a fan of TV’s Family Guy, it is hard hearing Mila without envisioning her cartoon character Meg since she uses her natural speaking voice; Not a problem just weird. In the movie, there are flashbacks throughout to help explain what no one wanted or needed to know, but it fills the dead space between action scenes as they milk it until the very end of the movie. The chemistry between Mila and Kate is, at times, hard to look at and even harder to accept. They are supposed to be best friends, but it seemed more like a forced relationship of people taking a dare. . . and losing. For this movie to work, Mila needed to up her energy levels, or Kate needed to dial hers back (a lot), either way, these two are a serious mismatch. The Spy Who Dumped Me has some unexpectedly decent fight scenes and a couple of nice twists to keep you interested but underneath it all, it’s just another mediocre comedy chick-flick trying to pass as a strong woman action movie.
