MOVIESinMO REVIEW
High school senior Sam Greenfield, an 18-year-old orphan girl, is the world’s unluckiest person, but she rolls with the punches. The story opens with Sam facing various unlucky scenarios in her newfound independence. She’s voiced by Eva Noblezada, bringing a cheerful and kind vibe, especially with her friend Hazel, played by Adelynn Spoon. Hazel dreams of being adopted, adding a touching layer to the narrative. One night, Sam shares her panini with a stray black cat, which leads to finding a lucky penny that changes her fortunes. However, her luck takes a turn when she loses the penny, catapulting her into an adventure in the Land of Luck. This fantastical world is visually stunning but feels more mechanical than the organic look of other animated films. The journey introduces quirky characters like Bob, the talking black cat voiced by Simon Pegg with a Scottish accent, adding to the film’s charm. However, as the story progresses, it becomes overly convoluted, losing some of its initial magic. The constant bantering and movement of the characters make the pacing feel off despite the strong voice cast. While the adoption storyline and the adventures in the human world are heartwarming, the film struggles with its narrative cohesion. Director Peggy Holmes, known for Tinkerbell features, creates a warm and funny story but lacks the emotional depth of other animated classics. The film’s visuals are captivating but sometimes overshadow the storytelling. Despite its flaws, Luck is a decent coming-of-age story that may resonate with audiences, especially those who have felt unlucky. While it may not reach the heights of Pixar films, it offers a warm and genuine experience with an original voice. Overall, Luck falls short of being a classic but still delivers a heartfelt message about finding luck in unexpected places.
