What’s It About

After finding a laptop, a young man goes online to play a game with five of his good friends. He shows them a mysterious folder that plays disturbing videos of people who appear to be in danger. They then receive an anonymous message that tells them they will all die if they disconnect or call the police. The planned night of fun quickly turns deadly as each user becomes the target of something sinister, while the others must watch helplessly in terror.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

The second time around a new group of social media friends and other video chat apps than Skype. This group of 20 somethings is a little smarter and more suspicious when weird things start to happen on their favorite chat site. As the title suggests, it’s the dark web, an actual place that lives on the web but like most of us, a place we have never gone. So since I don’t know what the “dark web” looks like, I’ll just take the filmmakers at their word and say it was represented correctly. What we do know about the dark web is how dangerous it is and how you CAN buy practically anything there. Although everyone online gets ultimately involved, Matias O’Brien played by Colin Woodell is the main character because his laptop is the one that jumpstarts this series of unfortunate events. Matias takes a laptop from the lost and found at an internet café he frequents. After admitting this to his friends, he and the rest of his friends are introduced to the dark web. Matias, along with everyone online watching, searches and views multiple files containing some very disturbing images. While the gang is unsure of their authenticity, they all agree to stop and call the authorities. This is when the movie kicks into second gear. At this point, the original owner has found Matias and friends, and he wants his laptop back. He gives imminent death threats to everyone on the video call and proves they are not empty threats. As the movie progresses, their friendship is tested as they are presumably hunted by the laptop’s original owner. Unfriended: Dark Web, like its predecessor, could have only existed in this time of social media dominance, and just like /thriller films, the same questions are here. Who is the killer and who will survive to the end.
