What’s It About

After a deadly virus wipes out most of humanity, the survivors are forced to wait alone in self-sustaining bunkers while the viral threat runs its course. Able to communicate through a networked video interface, the survivors wait for years and slowly become a motley family of sorts.  But their fragile social ecosystem is shattered when, one by one, they start mysteriously disappearing from their bunkers.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

So it’s the end of the world (somewhat), and the survivors are living alone in bunkers. We get to see six of those people as they live and communicate with each other via video conferencing. Their conversations are pointless, and their daily lives are more boring to watch. For over half of this movie, nothing happens, and when it does, you don’t care. There are tons of apocalyptic films, and most of them are great. Domain is not one of the great ones. It’s also not the worst movie in this genre, but it’s definitely not one of the better ones. It falls somewhere between “it’s the only thing on TV” and “I’m too lazy to locate the remote.” Domain has an interesting concept, but they don’t know what to do with it. Watching people talk to monitors isn’t new and having people trapped or forced to be in a room has been done before very successfully. This movie seems to have taken other movie ideas (Cube, Unfriended, Maze Runner) and screwed them up. The characters are boring, and after all the arguing, there’s really no point for any of them to stay within their “room.” Even when people start disappearing, you might be interested, but it’s too little too late. The whole thing is just filler until they get to the point and once you know what’s actually going on, you are immediately upset as to how stupid and lazy the story is.
