The legendary Clades are a family of explorers whose differences threatened to topple their latest and most crucial mission.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Strange World has everything it needs to make it a Disney classic. It also has everything it needs to bring permanent division within its core audience while simultaneously creating a new fanbase. As far as the story goes, it follows the standard formula with a classic reveal at the end. Jaeger Clade and his son, Searcher Clade, are famous explorers attempting to climb the mountains surrounding their land, Avalonia. Jaeger is your standard dad, trying to mold his son in his image. Searcher never wanted this life and began to rebel. So far, this is a familiar story following a typical movie pattern. Fast-forward 25 years and Searcher has followed his dream, and Avalonia is in debited to his discovery. He has a wife, Meridian, a dog named Legend, and Ethan, his teenage son. Then something happened – an openly gay teen couple in a Disney movie. Yes, they did that in Lightyear, but they never forced it down your throat like in Strange World. I know we live in a society that prides itself on inclusion and acceptance. And the industry constantly changes to improve its take on representation. So that sort of thing wouldn’t bother me, but it was so random, and the film’s focus on it felt uncomfortably forced. Anyway, as I stated earlier, there’s nothing special or unique in Strange World. Even the back-and-forth banter between characters seemed to be rehashed from other movies. That doesn’t mean this is not a good movie. It has excellent visuals and plenty of colorful creatures I’m sure Disney will make into toys. But the overall story is lost on the focus of the same-sex couple. Unfortunately, if the couple didn’t exist, moviegoers would be forced to see how ordinary this film is. In other words, it wouldn’t matter. Strange World is a great movie for kids (with open-minded parents), but older viewers might fight it to Déjà vu to fully enjoy.
