MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Creed III is a significantly updated and dark version of Rocky 3. It also has loads of other film familiarities within it. There’s an in-depth story regarding Adonis and his close friend, Damian, that feels awfully familiar to many movies where they do something horrible as kids, then one goes to prison. Years later, the one that went to prison is out and looking for redemption. Sometimes in the form of death or the destruction of the person or people they feel did them wrong. The films Blood Brother, Candice, or Sleepers share the same type of story. What separates Creed III from those is the overall story and the superb acting from Michael B. Jordon and Johnathan Majors. Along with Phylicia Rashad, back as Adonis Creed’s mother, it was destined to be a hit. The best thing about Creed III is that it is nothing like Creed II. They fixed Adonis’ bitchiness and complete asshole personality. This time he’s a likable retired family man with a solid reputation as a businessman. He has more business sense and a calmer demeanor. But his calmness was also his weakness. His friend, Damian (Johnathan Majors), used that against Adonis, which sets up the entire reason for this film. As things progressed, it was nearly impossible not to think of the plot of Rocky 3, with a few updates for relevancy. Because similar to Rocky and other boxing movies, Adonis was ultimately forced to get back in the ring and fight his friend. The fights were some of the best I’ve seen on a film in a while, and they made sure every punch sounded just as visually hard as it looked. Outside of the ring was a separate collection of problems that could have easily been its own movie. The story of Adonis’ childhood also featured a story focusing on his friend, Damian. And stories revolving around his present day family consisting of his wife, child, and mother. Surprisingly, none of it takes anything away from the main plot but substantially adds to the purpose and meaning of the climatic showdown between the two former best friends.
